With the clock ticking on Enrique Riquelme’s Real Madrid presidential pitch, the potential candidate is dialling up his rhetoric.
The 37-year-old green energy billionaire is expected to announce that he’ll challenge the incumbent Florentino Perez ahead of the May 23rd deadline.
Riquelme has ticked every box ahead of a potential challenge, including a bank guarantee of close to €200million and a personal wealth that covers 10% of Madrid’s annual budget.
The Albacete-born businessman has told the media to expect news, and went even further at his latest public appearance.
“These could be the last Real Madrid elections because privatisation is coming, or at least that’s what’s being announced,” he said at the VII International Forum.
“Those of us who disagree with this privatisation have an ethical and moral obligation to ensure that Real Madrid remains owned by its members, that it has a more special place for those members.”
Speaking about his potential candidacy, he added: “I have a project for 2028, but I am looking to do something exciting in the short time we have to get to Saturday.
“We have a responsibility as Real Madrid members. There’s talk of transparency, of democracy, and we believe that if we achieve something exciting on the field, it’s time to propose a project.
“We’ve listened to the members these past few days; we’ve heard many things. We have a project that we’ve been preparing for many years, a very exciting, transformative project.”
He finished: “We can be rational in the professional aspect, but the passionate aspect is not rational.
“I have total respect for Real Madrid, for the institution, for Mr. Florentino Perez as a businessman and as president; we have all enjoyed the titles.
“What we are not going to do is be part of the charade.”
On top of Riquelme’s very professional response to Perez’s last-minute call-out, El Confidencial, who reported his initial interest, claim he’s planning some big moves in the transfer market.
They say he’s already contacted Manchester City’s Erling Haaland over a potential switch, while contacts have been made with Jurgen Klopp in an attempt to lure him out of retirement.
