Roberto Martinez is set for another high-profile international job according to reports in the Netherlands.
De Telegraaf claim that the Spanish coach is in advanced talks with the Netherlands in a surprise turn of events.
The Dutch haven’t had a foreign coach since 1977, and appeared determined to land another despite their options drying up.
Ronald Koeman stepped down after the World Cup and early runners Arne Slot and Peter Bosz rejected the role.
Things fell as low as retired veteran Louis van Gaal and the inexperienced Michael Reiziger before a late change.
Martinez is set to be named Netherlands coach
Martinez is now expected to take the role having left Portugal after a dire World Cup.
Portugal were one of the pre-tournament favourites with many of their players excelling at top level European side.
However, Martinez bet the house on Saudi-based Cristiano Ronaldo with disastrous results, awarding him every minute available before a last 16 exit.
Nevertheless, the Dutch association don’t appear to have any better ideas after Slot rejected them to stay in club football.
The former Liverpool boss also cleared up rumours that salary and contract length played into his decision.
Arne Slot clears up Netherlands rejection
He told AD: “In the past few weeks, and particularly the past few days, various reports have appeared regarding the vacancy at the Dutch national team, suggesting that I had withdrawn from the process after lengthy negotiations concerning, among other things, salary and the duration of the contract.
“That speculation is incorrect. We simply never reached that stage of the talks.
“The reality is that there were talks with the KNVB for a short period. That is only logical when you are approached for an important position and want to get a better picture of the role and the expectations.
“However, within a week of the first meeting, I made it clear to the KNVB that I saw my immediate future in club football again.”
