Real Madrid presidential candidate Enrique Riquelme has played possibly his biggest card yet with Jurgen Klopp.
The challenger to Florentino Perez has been making all sorts of promises ahead of the June 7th election and has been accused of populism by many.
He’s pitched signings of Manchester City duo Rodri and Erling Haaland, with the former far more possible than the latter.
On top of that, he’s made the far more likely promises of Raul as sporting director, Iker Casillas as a board member, Fernando Hierro as academy director and Vicente del Bosque as an advisor.
However, the least probable of all his offers for members is his latest – Klopp.
The former Liverpool coach is currently employed by Red Bull and continues to reiterate that he’s retired from management.
However, a statement from Riquelme’s team read: “Next Monday, Raúl González Blanco will contact Jurgen Klopp to personally present our sporting project and our desire for him to lead the team.”
Unlike his Haaland and Rodri announcements, Riquelme hasn’t made any promises with Klopp.
With the City paid he’s put it in legally binding writing that if they don’t sign during the 2026/27 season he will pay all membership fees for a year.
Yet just giving a big name, he may have tightened the race for the presidency even more.
Perez’s announcements, while more realistic, so far haven’t impressed.
He’s announced Jose Mourinho’s signing, but 79% of fans in a MARCA poll were dissatisfied with the deal, saying there are better coaches out there.
Meanwhile, an impending free transfer of Ibrahima Konate has also underwhelmed.
