Hansi Flick’s quick humour may have earned him a few extra boos next time Barcelona take on Real Madrid.
Barcelona travel to Atletico Madrid tonight for the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final.
The other side of the bracket contains Basque rivals Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao, completing an unusual absence for Real Madrid.
The Copa draw works on the same basis as Germany’s DFB Pokal where lower ranked teams get home advantage, and with LaLiga sides seeded, Atleti will be the first top tier side Barca have faced in this season’s competition.
That point was put to Flick ahead of their match, with a journalist asking if there wasn’t much merit to Barca’s final four berth when they have only faced lower league opponents.
Flick’s response? Well it was one for the ages.
“Ask Real Madrid,” he said to stunned silence and a smirk.
He was of course referring to the fact that Real also didn’t play a top flight side, but still got knocked out in the last 16 by second tier Albacete in Alvaro Arbeloa’s first game.
Ouch.
