Italy’s humiliation against Bosnia and Herzegovina isn’t over.
The four time World Cup champions missed out on a third-straight edition midweek, and Gigi Donnarumma was one of the faces of the disaster.
Captain and their most high-profile star, his shoot-out performance left a lot to be desired, as did his attitude just before.
Donnarumma took the cheat sheet of opposition goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj and ripped it up, but the St. Pauli man has now revealed there was a back-up on the bench.
“He was unsporting,” Vasilj said on his Bundesliga return.
“He tried to tear up the piece of paper on which I had written down the information about the Italian penalty takers, but fortunately the guys from the coaching staff had a copy.
“We had prepared well for any eventuality. I didn’t know they had a second piece of paper on the bench, but it’s clear that nothing was left to chance.
“Honestly, I couldn’t believe what was happening to me. It’s the first time something like this has happened to me.
“Donnarumma and I started arguing, then I went to the referee to try to convince him that my opponent deserved a yellow card. I thought his behaviour was truly unsporting .
“But in the end, I don’t want to say too much. In the end, we won, and some say it’s karma . And probably, yes, there is something similar in this story.”
There was more karma too, as it’s now emerged a Bosnian ball boy took hold of Donnarumma’s cheat sheet.
14-year-old Afan Cizmic has become a star in Bosnia, telling the news: “The paper is here in my pocket.
“It says which foot they shoot with – right or left. It also says how they shoot: towards the middle, to the right, whether they look at the goalkeeper or wait.
“It says that Donnarumma should follow the players, their movement.
“He was shouting at the security guards and the police. He thought they were the ones who took the paper.
“He was disappointed and angry. He picked up the towel and saw that the paper wasn’t there.”
