Professional football club or meme account?
It’s hard to tell with Atletico Madrid these days, particularly when it comes to Julian Alvarez.
Diego Simeone’s side ended the season trophyless, and like star midfielder Marcos Llorente, they’ve ended up spending too much time on Twitter.
Responding to Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez, the club posted a number of memes of Barca players in Atleti kits and some amusing captions.
One included a fake signing of Lamine Yamal in exchange for some Bad Bunny tickets and sunflower seeds.
Then, they dialled things, up attacking Barcelona over the Negreira case and historic payments to the head of referees.
“No, Atlético de Madrid would never do something like that,” they wrote.
“However, in recent months, we’ve been suffering a smear campaign against one of our players.
“Leaked information with ulterior motives, ‘fake news,’ constant disrespect, the culé version of the propaganda machine inventing little stories, calls before direct matchups…
“But of course, it wouldn’t occur to us either to have the referees’ vice president on our payroll or to resort to political favours to register players. RESPECT and VALUES.”
We hope Atleti’s social media manager had permission for the rant, or they could be facing some legal fees.
