Atletico Madrid fans had their best night in ages against Tottenham, only for Julian Alvarez to spoil it.
The Argentine World Cup winner scored twice in a sensational 5-2 Champions League win over Spurs which looks to have booked them a last 16 spot.
Alvarez was clearly at his best in the match, showing the kind of form that could make him their best player and one of the world’s best should he continue.
Yet the striker continues to be linked to Barcelona, and he didn’t distance himself from the club post-match.
Asked about his future, he gave fans the answer they didn’t want to hear.
“How should I know… I don’t know… Maybe yes, maybe no, you never know,” he said when asked if he’d be with Atleti next season.
“I’m very happy here and I’m focused on the present, working hard to give my best, and I’ve never said anything bad about the club. I’m very grateful.”
Before the Barcelona elections started, it was rumoured one candidate was tying their bid to the striker replacing Robert Lewandowski.
It now appears that Joan Laporta may be that man, given his comments before the game.
Asked about signing Alvarez, he replied: “If there’s a reasonable price, it could be considered. In principle, with what they’re asking for him, it’s out of the question.
“Julián should show his desire to come to Barça. That’s what we want from all the players we’re interested in.”
Desire shown, there’s no doubt about that.
