The Bundesliga’s top two both had a day to forget in pre-season.
Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund both tasted defeat, and both against third tier sides.
Bayern lost 2-1 to Wehen Wiesbaden, while Dortmund also fell 2-1 to Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Both of the victors are playing in Germany’s semi-professional third tier, with Dusseldorf relegated last season.
Speaking after Bayern’s defeat, head coach Vincent Kompany cited the World Cup as a cause for their struggles.
“Last year we had the extreme case with the Club World Cup; it’s not the first time,” said Kompany.
“But back then we were all back at the same time, which isn’t the case now. But no complaints from our side. We know when we need to be at 100 per cent.”
Bayern now head to Korea and Hong Kong, but they will be without Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano, Jamal Musiala, Alphonso Davies, Ismael Saibari, Serge Gnabry and Lennart Karl.
BVB head to Japan, but won’t have Gregor Kobel, Ramy Bensebaini, Julian Ryerson, Marcel Sabitzer, and the injured Nico Schlotterbeck and Emre Can.
