Xavi Hernandez was in fine form during his first press conference as Netherlands coach.
The Spaniard was a surprise announcement last week, getting the job after Ronald Koeman’s departure to become the first foreign coach of the Oranje in 48 years.
His arrival came after links to the most important coach of his career – Pep Guardiola, while former Liverpool boss Arne Slot also admitted to talks.
In fact, federation director Nigel de Jong has even admitted that Guardiola was first choice.
Responding to the claims he was third choice, Xavi gave an amusing response as he showed off impeccable English.

“After Guardiola and Slot, yes, but at least I was on the podium,” he said with a smile.
“Third choice, it doesn’t matter to me at all. I consider this an honour. When I watched the Netherlands as a child, I saw good football.”
He added: “I have a strong connection with this country, I feel like I am now going to the university of football.
“I want to create a family here; we need to start dominating and show passion. But I am here to win, I repeat: I am here to win.
“I believe in the players and I thank the people once again for showing faith in me. I am ready to start, super ready even.
“I am a foreigner, but I learned from this university as a player, and now I want to give something back. I feel the pressure, but I love it. I am a winner.
“Johan Cruyff’s influence on me? I was in contact with him during the final period of his life. Johan was always positive, even when he was ill. I want to show that too; I want to help my players.”
Xavi was also asked about comparisons to World Cup winners Spain and his diagnosis of the problems with Dutch football.

“That is a question for Nigel de Jong, but together we want to establish a new philosophy,” he said.
“I hope we can achieve results soon and show good matches. The Netherlands has a lot of talent; we will have to choose carefully.
“The structure is there in Spain, the federation there has done a good job. We want that here too; I want eighteen million people to enjoy our football.
“It is a long-term project; the 2030 World Cup in Spain gives me even more motivation. But first, there is the Nations League and the European Championship.”
Later, Xavi had a moment with another of his Barca managers, Louis van Gaal, who sent a video messgage.
In it he said: . “I got to know you as a player, even gave you your debut in a Super Cup match against Mallorca. You will undoubtedly remember it.
“As a player, you have of course developed fantastically, despite the handicap of your physical ability.
“I know you less well as a trainer. But as a coach, too, you have won many trophies.
“What are we Dutch supposed to say then? Always being critical of choices, selections, and whatever else. I have a good feeling about you.
“I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you, Xavi. Good luck.”
