It’s panic stations in Lisbon after Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand teased a departure.
The two-time Primeira Liga winner has been linked with Real Madrid after a season of conflicts with Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho wasn’t a fan of Hjulmand’s relationship with referees while facing him with Benfica, but that appears to have been more of a begrudging respect.
Reports in Spain claim he’s on Mourinho’s wish-list at Real should the club fail in their attempts to bring Rodri in from Real Madrid.
Sporting coach Rui Borges has since responded by saying he isn’t at all surprised, and Hjulmand has now given his take ahead of the Portuguese league cup final.
“It’s a great honour for me to see my name associated with a club like Real Madrid,” he said.
“But I’m at Sporting and I have a lot of affection for this club. Therefore, my focus is on being here and on tomorrow’s match.”
He then added: “I’ll talk about my future after tomorrow’s game, that’s for sure.
“I don’t think this is the right moment to talk about my future.
“The focus should be on Sporting and the match, especially since we haven’t won any titles this season yet, and that’s the most important thing.
“I’ll talk about my future after the last match of the season.”
Responding to the comments on Portuguese sports TV show Record na hora, the pundits surmised: “He seems to have already said goodbye to Sporting and has the attention of Jose Mourinho.
Hjulmand has the qualities to play for a top team ,” they said. According to the program, the player is excited about the idea of playing under José Mourinho at Real Madrid.
“He’s a coach’s player; everyone who’s had him speaks highly of Hjulmand.
“And those who haven’t, like Mourinho, would love to have him. He’s a player he could really like and one that Real Madrid might be missing.”
