Morten Hjulmand has finally responded to Jose Mourinho’s claims about his relationship with referees.
Mourinho went after the Sporting CP captain at the start of December following a 1-1 draw with his Benfica side in the Primeira Liga.
“There’s a Sporting player who’s untouchable,” he said.
“He controls the game, commits the fouls he wants, and once again leaves the game without a single yellow card.
“Regarding that player, there’s a double standard.”
Everyone assumed the comments were about Hjulmand, but without naming him, the Dane stayed away.
Now speaking on international duty, the midfielder has finally responded.
“I don’t understand and I don’t know what he meant by that,” he said.
“I have a good relationship with the referees. Sometimes I disagree, because I want to win the games.
“In fact, I even learned Portuguese so I could talk to the referees.
“I learned to be careful when I receive a yellow card in the first few minutes. I know that in a mere duel a red card can follow.”
The stats back up Hjulmand too, as he is the most cautioned player in the Primeira Liga since his 2023 arrival with 25 yellow cards and one red in 71 games.
