Thiago Alcantara signed off his retirement statement with the words ‘see you soon’ and it looks like that will very much be the case.
The Spain midfielder called time on his iconic career after an injury-hit stint at Liverpool ended with just one appearance during the 2023/24 season.
Thiago is known as one of the most intelligent midfielders of his generation, playing under many of the game’s greatest-ever managers and speaking numerous languages fluently.
It turns out that the final skill on the list could come in particularly handy for his next job at Barcelona.
Multiple reports in Spain claim that negotiations are already underway for Thiago to return to his first-ever club, with new head coach Hansi Flick keen to make him his assistant.
Flick is looking for a multi-lingual conduit between himself and the players, with Thiago fluent in Spanish, Catalan, German, English and many other languages.
He also has the added bonus of understanding the club’s culture and its eco-system, something Flick’s other assistants, Toni Tapalovic and Marcus Sorg, don’t.
Flick also previously described Thiago as his ‘favourite player’ when the two won a European treble together at Bayern Munich in 2020, and likely won’t need to add much more charm with an offer on the table.
Flick officially begins coaching at Barca on Wednesday, and Thiago’s decision between a sabbatical or an instant return could be made in the coming days.
