Thiago Motta has raised eyebrows throughout his coaching career, but this time not in a good way.
Juventus were knocked out of the Champions League last night by PSV in extra time.
Juve are also well off the pace in Serie A, 10 points behind leaders Napoli, and questions are starting to be asked of the Italy legend.
However, despite being well-beaten by an unfancied PSV side who easily could have scored more, Motta’s reaction caused some panic for Juve fans post-match.”
“It is not true that PSV wanted to qualify more than us, but after the equalizer, they pushed harder and were superior,” he told Sky.
“We had a hard time. Locatelli said that we had ruined everything? It is not true, we tried, but we did not manage to be superior.
“PSV deserved to go through to the next round. It hurts, but I would do everything the same way again, I am convinced of it. “
That last comment caused plenty of fuss, with Paulo Di Canio among the pundits to come down hard on Motta.
“PSV gave a football lesson to Juventus,” he said. “The Dutch dominated and deserved to advance to the next round.
“Thiago Motta was confused: he was making some changes and then changed his mind after the 1-1 goal.
“In any case, Juve didn’t deserve it in the first leg, it’s clear they deserved to be eliminated. I counted eight or nine goal opportunities, PSV could have scored five or six goals against Juventus this evening.”
He continued: “Juventus failed to create anything in the second half, I didn’t even see a counterattack.
“With the management errors: from my point of view there is no explanation. The team was in difficulty in midfield, Thiago Motta warmed up three players role by role in order to contain the opponent’s exuberance but he waited and the equaliser arrived.
“And there in my opinion he should have made changes to keep the intensity high. Instead, he waited until he conceded another goal to bring on three players. I can’t explain this.”
