Three French players rejected the chance to comment on the country’s political situation, but Ousmane Dembele wasn’t one of them.
Dayot Upamecano, Kingsley Coman and Ferland Mendy had already refused to comment on French President Emmanuel Macron’s decision to call a snap election after huge gains by the far-right in the European Union elections.
PSG’s Dembele didn’t bite his tongue, saying: “It’s not that I don’t want to take a stand, but given the situation in France I think the alarm bells have been raised.
“I think we need to mobilize to vote. I looked at the 1pm news and saw that one in two French people did not vote. We must mobilize to vote.
“The legislative elections are coming, the FFF [French Football Federation] is going to put something in place so that we can vote by proxy.”
Earlier in the press conference Mendy said: “I don’t need to spread anything,” while a day before Upamecano commented: “I did not come to talk about politics, I prefer to talk about football.”
