Marcus Thuram has used his platform to encourage the French public to reject the rise of the country’s far-right party, National Rally [RN].
All of France’s superstars put before the media have been questioned about the results of the EU elections which saw massive gains for the far-right in France.
Most players rejected the opportunity to speak, aside from Ousmane Dembele and Olivier Giroud who encouraged the public to get out and vote.
Thuram went further though, pleading with them not to vote for RN in the upcoming presidential elections.
“It’s is sad and very serious,” he said “We were all a bit shocked in the locker room, it’s sad… Messages are conveyed every day on TV to help this party get through.
“As Ousmane said, we must tell everyone to go and vote. We must fight every day so that this does not happen again and that the National Rally does not win.
“I have no doubt that everyone shares my vision within the France team. After all, we are in a free country. Everyone must do what they feel, what they consider right.
“We can be more modest on this subject, but I repeat, I have no doubt that everyone in Blue thinks the same as me.
“Saying that we have to go and vote is not enough. We must explain how we got here and detail the seriousness of the situation. It’s not complicated to talk about it.”
Marcus Thuram’s father, the legendary Lillian, also spoke out against RN leader Jean-Marie Le Pen during his playing career, and now his daughter, Marine, is running the party.
Asked if his dad has an influence, Thuran Jr. added: “My father doesn’t encourage me to do anything except to be a well-behaved boy.
“Growing up with him, having discussions with him, I feel responsible for keeping this kind of message.”
