Pierre Emerick Aubameyang’s return to LaLiga with Deportivo La Coruña has baffled everyone, including his coach.
The 37-year-old, formerly of Barcelona, has scored in all four of Depor’s opening matches and last time out against Villarreal he also added two assists.
He’s broken a number of records as a result, becoming the first African player to reach 250 goals in Europe’s top five leagues.
He’s also had the best-ever start of any Depor player in the 21st century, and second best overall, while he’s also the oldest player to be involved in at least one goal in his first four LaLiga appearances for a club.
Aubameyang earns top praise from Depor coach
Explaining why the Gabonese striker appears to evergreen, Depor coach Antonio Hidalgo said: “Aubameyang is absolutely incredible. He doesn’t miss a single training session and works harder than anyone.
“But he has a truly exceptional talent. It’s absolutely insane. His talent is game-changing.”
He added: “This is a long season. We’re getting closer to safety. We’re a newly promoted team.
“This is going to be a long road. I know how this works, and I’ve been involved in football for a long time.”
Aubameyang is clearly also a fan of Hidalgo, saying he was one of the main reasons for the move from Marseille.

“When we talked, I liked him a lot and we said: let’s go there,” he said on arrival.
“I still have a lot of enthusiasm for doing many things. I have that desire to continue being the striker I’ve been until now.
“Hidalgo wants me to contribute my experience. I really enjoyed the conversation I had with him. It was a very open and direct discussion.”
Aubameyang also promised to score goals when explaining why he’d taken the number 7 shirt.
He said: “It’s a number I really like. I’ve used it in the past and I think there are some great players in Deportivo’s history who have worn it. I want to be one of them.
“The goals will come. I don’t know the number, but hopefully there will be many. I’m going to score goals, provide many assists, and win games.”
