PSV won the first big Eredivisie match of the season in convincing fashion, but Ruben van Bommel left everyone with a bitter taste.
PSV beat title rivals Ajax 3-1, but in the closing stages Van Bommel made an outrageous aerial challenge and his hip ended up striking Aaron Bouwman in the head.
A melee followed and somehow no red cards were shown. Bouwman was unable to play the final minutes, and was then taken to hospital.
Serious accusations against Van Bommel
Leading AD columnist Hugo Borst was stunned, writing: “This is an attempted murder.
“This is an absurd short circuit. I advise him to see a psychiatrist.”
Ajax captain Davy Klaassen added: “You can see that he crashed into him full force. I thought it was nothing but a red card.”
His coach, Michel, commented: “We think it is sensible to perform a number of scans.
“It could also have been a red card, because Van Bommel had no intention of playing the ball.
“But the most important thing now is Aaron’s health. He was having trouble breathing.”
From the PSV side, Van Bommel stayed in the dressing room rather than coming out to celebrate the win at Ajax’s stadium.
His coach Peter Bosz explained after: “Ruben is visibly upset in the dressing room. He is the only one who didn’t join in the celebrations.
“It was absolutely not his intention. He jumps towards the ball and twists his body in, because he thought they would collide heads. You run into a wall with him, because he is so strong.”
