A small war is brewing in Madrid over Kylian Mbappe’s dodgy knee.
The France captain has missed Real Madrid’s last two matches over knee pain, but has been in and out of the squad over issues with the joint since the end of last year.
Mbappe has now seemingly taken matters into his own hands, travelling home to Paris to undergo specialist treatment.
Madrid have since provided an update on the issue, saying it’s been diagnosed as a left knee sprain and that he’ll out for around three weeks.
The club are specifically targeting a return for the second leg of the last 16 Champions League tie against Manchester City.
However, Mbappe’s camp are now briefing to the Spanish media that they disagree with the prognosis.
A number of Spanish outlets have stressed Mbappe’s point of view that he will need longer, including leading radio station Cadena SER.
“The player’s left posterior cruciate ligament is at its limit,” Antón Meana said.
“We’re going to call it a sprain because that’s what the medical report says, but the injury is really significant.
“There are 100 days left until the World Cup, and Mbappé can’t afford to waste any of them. Those 100 days are crucial for him to fully recover.”
He added that, “The player’s entourage doesn’t agree with the return timeline set by Real Madrid.
“Playing a match would be a risk, and he’s not going to take any.
“If Madrid loses 3-0 [against City], he’s not going to risk his leg trying to come back in the second leg. His entourage says he needs to recover properly.”
