Ajax have announced former Watford and Brighton manager Oscar Garcia as the new coach of Jong Ajax.
The Spaniard, who has coached across numerous countries and leagues, as well as youth teams, heads down to the Netherlands’ Eerste Divisie.
Despite struggles for the senior side in the Eredivisie, things are even worse for Jong Ajax who are bottom of the table.
However, relegation from the second tier doesn’t exist with the top two divisions a closed shop.
The move is one of the first by new Ajax technical director Jordi Cruyff.
In a statement, he said: “Oscar and I know each other well. More importantly, I understand his football vision and mentality. That will be very beneficial for Jong Ajax.
“Oscar is an experienced trainer-coach who has worked in many countries and leagues, so he understands different football cultures and has won numerous trophies.
“It’s also important for his role with Jong Ajax that he played football in Barcelona’s youth academy and was also a coach of the top youth team there.
“With the appointment of Oscar and his assistants, we’re raising the bar for the further development of our talents and demonstrating that Jong Ajax is an important team for the club.”
Those comments about Barcelona will also raise eyebrows, given Ajax’s links to Cruyff’s friend Xavi for the 2026/27 season.
