Oscar Garcia has been named Ajax’s new head coach after calling time on interim Fred Grim.
Grim, who has worked at Ajax for decades in various roles, leaves after a humiliating 3-1 defeat to Groningen dropped the Amsterdam side down to 5th in the Eredivisie.
Replacing him will be Garcia, who only arrived last month to coach Jong Ajax in the second tier.
Formerly of Watford and Brighton, Garcia failed to get Jong Ajax off the bottom of the table, but has a long standing relationship with new sporting director Jordi Cruyff.
Ajax confirm the coaching change
Announcing the news, the club said: “Oscar García will take over Fred Grim’s duties.
“The head coach of Jong Ajax will, with immediate effect, take charge of Ajax’s first team. Grim will return to his role within the Ajax academy.”
Cruyff added: “Fred and I had a conversation today about what is best for the club.
“Together we agreed that something needs to change. He stepped in during a difficult period and has done everything he could. We are grateful to him for that.
“Oscar will see out the season. The coming months are very important for the club. We still have eight matches to play and we must get the maximum out of them together.”
