Despite links to far more familiar Bundesliga names like Marco Rose and Edin Terzic, Eintracht Frankfurt have incredibly picked Albert Riera as their next head coach.
Leading German outlets Kicker and BILD report that the Spaniard is expected to be on the bench for Saturday’s match against Bayer Leverkusen.
Best known for his time in the Premier League with Liverpool, the 16-time Spain international has had an unusual career both as a player and coach.
Having left his native Spain and played in France, England, Greece, Turkey and Slovenia, he stayed in the latter as a coach with Celje in two stints where he’s impressed as a trophy winner.
The move certainly has echoes of Leverkusen’s signing of Xabi Alonso which led to a first-ever Bundesliga win.
Frankfurt were said to have pressed for talks with Alonso, but instead have gone for a surprise, something often not seen in the risk-averse Bundesliga.
