Having only just arrived in the Bundesliga with Eintracht Frankfurt, Albert Riera isn’t making many friends.
The Spaniard continued his unusual coaching career by swapping the Slovenian league for Germany, having been on the radar of many top sides.
So far he’s stood out for his rather odd but entertaining press conferences, but not everyone is a fan.
Bundesliga cult heroes Max Kruse and Martin Harnik discussed Riera on their podcast, and the latter certainly isn’t a fan.
First Kruse said: “Maybe he’s overdoing it. As a player, I’d have my problems with that. I think it’s also a bit too much of a show.”
Albert Riera hammered by Werder Bremen great
Harnik was then more blunt, adding: “He’s extremely arrogant and self-absorbed.
“The things he rants about at press conferences. I don’t even find it funny.
“It’s not like you can just say, ‘Okay, he’s a bit eccentric.’ But he’s arrogant like he’s from another planet. It doesn’t appeal to me in the slightest.
“He’s the kind of guy, to be quite honest, I don’t wish him any success. He doesn’t move me at all to say: ‘Yes, okay, super interesting or exciting approach.’
“All I think about him is: ‘Okay, seeing him go down without a trace would be quite funny.’”
He finished: “Frankfurt worked so brilliantly and professionally, had so much success, and exciting coaches like Oliver Glasner and Dino Toppmöller.
“They were all characters who stood for understatement and honest work. And now this guy, who’s making such a fuss and hasn’t proven anything in Germany yet.”
