Alvaro Morata has revealed he was close to retiring from football.
The Atletico Madrid striker is currently in excellent form, but it hasn’t always been that way.
Having played for other footballing giants such as Real Madrid, Chelsea and Juventus, the pressure was often too much.
Now, on international duty with Spain, Morata revealed how bad things got.
“There are things that I have had to experience throughout these years that are very unpleasant,” he said.
“For I have also had to work on my head a lot, I have had moments of wanting to leave and leave everything because it was not worth it for me to go through what was happening.
“If there is one thing I am proud of, it is being here, with the National Team, doing interviews and having continued when I had no strength or desire or enthusiasm.
“It is thanks to my family and the people I work with. Here I am and that for me is just as important as a title. When you go through certain moments, coming back is a triumph.
“No, it is not an exaggeration [that I would retire]. Someday I will interview my wife or my family and they will be able to tell you everything.
“I have had very bad and low moments and thank God, having my wife, my friends… How was I going to explain to my children that he had left him because of things that happened to me off the field.
“If there is something I am proud of, it is being able to tell my children my story and for them to see that I can be a better or worse player, but that I have always tried again.”
