Barcelona have had to take special measures with the solar eclipse to interrupt a match at the Johan Cruyff Stadium this evening.
Barca’s women team take on Montpellier in their first pre-season friendly which kicks of at 7:00pm.
The solar eclipse is set to hit the stadium at 7:35pm, causing a momentary blackout.
In response, Barcelona will issue around 1500 special glasses so fans can watch the eclipse without damaging their eyes.
The game will not stop, and Barcelona have told players not to look at the sun.
TV3 reporter Laura Brugues explained: “This spot on the side of the Johan Cruyff Stadium will offer one of the best views of the eclipse because the sun sets behind the stand.
“The players will be on the pitch while the eclipse is taking place, as the match kicks off at 7 p.m.
“The eclipse will begin a little over half an hour into the game, and the peak of the phenomenon will occur toward the end of the second half.
“At the moment, there are no plans to stop the match at any point.
“The players have been given some recommendations, above all not to be tempted to look directly at the sun at any time.
“And the fans—the lucky ones who will be able to watch the eclipse from the stands—will be equipped with certified eclipse glasses for the occasion.
“Aside from this phenomenon, the team trained today at the club’s training complex.
“Tomorrow’s match will be Pere Romeu’s first preseason friendly in charge of the team.
“Aitana Bonmatí is still training separately as she continues to recover from an ankle problem.
“The more than one thousand fans who have already bought tickets will be able to see the club’s four new signings: Keroline Nicoli, Martina Fernández, Renée Van Lanten, and goalkeeper Macamey.
“On Saturday, Barça will play another friendly away to Manchester City, and next Friday they will contest the Joan Gamper Trophy against Brighton.”
