With fans from Senegal already banned from the US portion of the World Cup, journalists are now having just as hard a time.
Senegal are one of the countries from the so-called ‘global south‘ to suffer from Donald Trump’s strict immigration policy, seeing supporters banned from entering the country.
Numerous journalists also had their visas denied, and the ones that did make it now face a tough choice.
Ouest France reports that the 90-day visas given to Senegalese journalists only allow a single entry into the US.
That means that those who head to Toronto, Canada, for their final crucial group game against Iraq won’t be allowed back in.
They’re now faced with a tough choice, miss the potential exit match if they fail to progress, or likely the entire knockout rounds if they do.
Leading Senegalese journalist Mamadou Koumé commented: “It will be a World Cup in half.
“The universality of the World Cup is being undermined in this edition.
“Adding to these entry restrictions is the high cost of the competition, particularly accommodation and transportation, given that the World Cup is being held in three countries.
“Due to the high cost of this World Cup, some Senegalese journalists have declined to participate.”
