The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have rejected Morocco’s appeal to strip Senegal of its Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after days of delay.
However, the governing body have hit Senegal coach Pape Thiaw with a hefty penalty for instructing his players to leave the pitch during the final.
The coach will be banned for five games, which could see him miss the entirety of the World Cup.
In a statement, CAF said: “The CAF Disciplinary Jury rejected the claim submitted by the FRMF (Moroccan federation), regarding the alleged violations committed by the FSF of articles 82 and 84 of the Regulations of the Africa Cup of Nations, in relation to the final of the CAF TotalEnergies Morocco 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.”
Announcing a number of sanctions, Thiaw’s was the heaviest, with CAF stating: “To suspend Mr Pape Bouna Thiaw, the Head Coach of the Senegalese National Team, for five (5) official CAF matches for his unsporting conduct in violation of the CAF Disciplinary Code principles of fair play and integrity and for bringing the game into disrepute.”
He was also fined $100,000.
Iliman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr received two match bans for ‘unsporting behaviour towards the referee, while Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi was given two games and Ismael Saibari three for unsporting behaviour.
