Trent Alexander-Arnold’s start to life at Real Madrid has gotten worse after a fine performance from Dani Carvajal.
The club captain relegated the former Liverpool right back to the bench against Real Oviedo and shone in a 3-0 away win.
That was a stark contrast to their opening match against Osasuna where Alexander-Arnold played and struggled, receiving plenty of criticism.
The narrative has continued into matchday 2, with leading Spanish journalist Antonio Romero saying on Cadena SER: “If Carvajal is fit, Trent will warm the bench.
“I’m crossing my fingers [for Carvajal]. I hope his health holds up all season. If he’s at 95% of his pre-injury level, Alexander-Arnold… either plays in another position or plays to give Carvajal a rest.”
Fellow pundit Jesús Gallego suggested ‘Trent’ should learn some lessons from fellow new signing Álvaro Carreras.
“He needs to take a step forward and realize that he didn’t come here to receive the ball and pass back. Something else is expected of him here,” Gallego emphasized.
“[Carreras] doesn’t stop. He goes up, drops down, steals, touches, dribbles. And he’s giving Alexander-Arnold a lesson in what it means to sign for Real Madrid, even though he’s coming from the all-powerful Liverpool. He needs to wake up.”
AS editor Tomas Roncero added: “Trent doesn’t deserve to start.
“Either he changes his mindset or he’ll stay on the bench.”
