Toni Kroos will be glad to get out of Riyadh on Sunday.
The German’s Real Madrid side beat Atletico Madrid 5-3 in the Supercopa de Espana semi-finals, setting up a decider with the winner of Barcelona v Osasuna.
Kroos had earlier condemned players who have moved to the Saudi Pro League criticising the country’s terrible human rights record, which has repeatedly been condemned by Amnesty International.
“I would never play there, the lack of human rights would prevent me from doing so,” he said.
“It has been said that ambitious football is played there, but everything revolves around money. Going to Arabia is a decision for money and against football.”
Kroos entered the pitch in the 67th minute of the match, and had his every touch booed, a clear repost for his comments about the country.
Responding to the atmosphere, he wrote on social media post-match: “That was fun today! Amazing crowd.”
Asked about the booing in his press conference, manager Carlo Ancelotti said: “I don’t understand the boos and I don’t think Kroos does either.”
Kroos was key in Madrid winning the match in stoppage time, but noticeably chose not to celebrate with his teammates as they piled on for the final two goals.
