FC Porto have announced the signing of Gabri Veiga from Al Ahli, and Toni Kroos will be relieved.
The 23-year-old midfielder was seen as one of Spain’s best up and coming talents at Celta Vigo before he shocked the world with a switch to the Saudi Pro League in 2023.
In particular, he amazed Real Madrid legend Kroos, who commented on an Instagram post confirming the transfer with the word ’embarrassing’.
Kroos soon deleted his comments, but his sentiments were echoed, with the majority of the players moving to Saudi doing so for one last payday as they were at the end of their careers.
Veiga was just at the beginning, and will now start again at Porto.
Confirming the deal was taking place before its official announcement, Porto president Andre Villas Boas said: “We have authorization from Al Ahli to speak to the player, who has expressed his willingness and, as you can imagine, is giving up more than 90% of his salary to play for FC Porto.
“This is something truly remarkable in the career of an athlete, who generally seeks to recover or maximize his income during transfers.”
