Spain U21 Gabri Veiga has denied that he joined Al Ahli for money.
The former Celta Vigo midfielder was one of Europe’s highest-rated talents heading into the summer, linked with many of the Champions League’s elite.
However, he instead opted for the Saudi Pro League, in one of the divisions biggest statement signings, considering his 21 years of age.
For obvious reasons, many suspect that Veiga joined Al Ahli for a payday, but he’s now denied that.
“Well, I think it’s such a strange question… I’m telling you directly that no,” he told Cadena SER.
“I do understand that everyone has their opinion, their way of thinking and making their decisions, but there were other reasons that tipped the balance a little and I am very proud of the step I have taken.
“In the end, among all the options I was considering, I think it was the one that allowed me the most to grow as a footballer, mature and continue growing in the world of football.
“A young coach, a team with so many stars and a league that is growing a lot. It was a step to look to the future, although there are many people who do not understand it, but I am not going to ask them to understand it, so for me it is the best step I could take.”
