Thomas Muller has finally opened up on his Bayern Munich departure.
The Vancouver Whitecaps striker was forced to leave his lifelong club in the summer despite wanting to stay for another season.
Bayern opted against renewing the 35-year-old’s contract, but the saga dragged on for months with disagreements at board level.
One of those making the call, honorary president Uli Hoeness, particularly upset Muller even to this day.
“The club had already made a decision internally and hadn’t informed me yet,” he reflected.
“To be honest, I wasn’t very happy that Uli Hoeness then tried to ‘build a bridge for me’ and publicly commented on my contract situation at the cinema premiere of my documentary.
“I would have preferred a straightforward approach.
“Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a fan of open-mindedness. Despite the bumpy start I’ve already described, my departure from FC Bayern over the past few months was absolutely extraordinary and very special for me.
“As I already mentioned in my letter at the beginning of April, the communication regarding the end of my contract was not really optimal.
“I also informed those in charge that I didn’t like it, as they say in Bavaria.”
