By far the biggest decision of Bayern Munich’s season, the call to part ways with Thomas Muller could derail the Bavarian’s season.
Muller announced the shock split on social media, pointing the finger at the club for not negotiating with him.
While it’s true that his impact has fallen off a cliff this season, fans are furious with the split, and as it turns out, not everyone at the club was in agreement.
Explaining what went on behind the scenes, club legend Lothar Matthaus said: “There were communication problems – absolutely.
“Things are a bit off at Bayern Munich, opinions are divided, and the Müller case demonstrates this once again quite clearly.
“[Sporting director] Max Eberl actually just wanted to extend his contract and [honorary president] Uli Hoeneß said that it would not do Müller or FC Bayern any good.
“[He said] that the club was paying a lot of money for a player from whom one could no longer expect these sporting achievements – after many, many years as a professional, which is a completely normal occurrence.
“He can’t be satisfied with the few appearances Müller has received in recent months. Uli is an honest person. He always says what he thinks—it doesn’t always have to be right. But I agree with Uli Hoeneß on this one.”
The news comes ahead of a huge week for Bayern who face Inter Milan in the Champions League quarter-finals with a series of serious injuries.
They then take on Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker with title rivals Bayer Leverkusen still breathing down their necks.
