If the Confederation of African Football [CAF’s] decision to overturn the AFCON final result wasn’t ludicrous enough, they’re going to even more extreme lengths.
African football’s governing body announced they were stripping Senegal of the title and awarding it to defeated finalists Morocco on Tuesday.
The decision was down to what CAF call a ‘non-appearance’ – in other words, Senegal walking off the pitch at full-time after having a goal ruled out then a penalty given against them.
Senegal have announced that they will appeal the decision, but CAF aren’t letting up, reportedly asking captain Sadio Mane to return his MVP award for the tournament.
They also want to give it to Morocco’s Brahim Diaz, who did the least MVP thing possible by botching a Panenka penalty that would have won his nation the trophy.
Mané reportedly refused, arguing that the trophy, like the Africa Cup of Nations itself, is stored at a military base in Senegal.
The Senegalese Football Federation announced it will appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to overturn CAF’s decision.
