Real Madrid have released a statement confirming they made an offer to Atletico Madrid for Julian Alvarez worth €150million.
In an unusual turn of events, the offer got the ‘Comunicado Oficial’ treatment across Madrid’s socials, something that’s normally only reserved for completed deals.
The club’s statement read: “Real Madrid announces that following today’s board meeting, the club has made an offer of 150 million euros to Club Atletico de Madrid for the transfer rights of player Julian Alvarez.
“After examining and evaluating the offer, Club Atletico de Madrid appreciated the offer submitted within the framework of the good relations between the two clubs and rejected it with reference to the player’s release clause.”
Alvarez’s release clause is €500m, but his management have been inviting clubs to make offers according to reports.
Furthermore, the €150m figure is reportedly what sporting director Matheu Alemany is looking for to rebuild his squad.
Alvarez was previously the subject of a €100m offer from Barcelona, who have been far more public in their pursuit of the striker.
Such public interest was roundly criticised by Atleti who rejected the offer out of hand.
Yet Alvarez continues to seek a move away, with PSG and Arsenal seemingly front-runners.
But then Madrid’s interest came almost out of nowhere.
Club president Florentino Perez talked of a club record €150m offer that would be made when he was re-elected.
Many assumed it would be for Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, or PSG’s Vitinha.
Yet the bid for Alvarez comes as a surprise, and many cynics are already suggesting Perez perhaps made the offer knowing it would fail but still fulfil his election promise.
