Referee Clément Turpin has confirmed that UEFA will open an investigation into Raphinha over his post-match comments.
Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday night with Atletico Madrid losing 2-1 on the night to win 3-2 on aggregate.
Barca ended with 10 men and had a goal overturned by VAR for a clear offside.
Speaking post-match, captain Raphinha, who didn’t feature due to injury, went nuclear.
Raphinha says game was stolen
“It was a stolen match, the refereeing was terrible,” he said.
“The decisions they made were unbelievable. Atlético committed countless fouls and didn’t receive a single yellow card.
“I want to believe it’s really fear that Barcelona might win.”
As per Cadena SER, Turpin has since confirmed UEFA will investigate the comments.
Raphinha is likely to pick up a hefty fine, but he could also be suspended next season.
Neymar case could cause problems
There is precedent for such an outburst coming from former Barca man Neymar in 2019.
On that occasion he was also on the sidelines as PSG were knocked out of Europe by Manchester United.
Post-match he wrote on social media: “It’s a disgrace. Four guys who know nothing about football watch a slow-motion replay in front of the television.”
Referring to a penalty that was given and converted by Marcus Rashford to win the match, he said it ‘didn’t exist’ adding: “What can [Kimpembe] do with his hand while his back is turned?”
On that occasion Neymar was banned for three games, which suggests Raphinha could be set for worse given his accusations of bias.
De Jong doubles down
Unlike Raphinha, Frenkie De Jong believes officiating in the first leg was Barca’s undoing.
“In the first leg, the refereeing was decisive,” he said after the knock out.
“The play that defined the match in the first leg was Pubill stopping that action with his hand, which should have been a red card and a penalty.
“In the first match, the refereeing was decisive.”
He added: “We tried everything, we played well in both matches.
“In the end, it wasn’t enough. We want to improve, but we have the feeling that luck wasn’t with us.”
