Neymar has extended his Santos contract for another full season, with even the club joking about lower expectations.
Brazil’s all-time top scorer was set to become a free agent at midnight on December 31, but the club confirmed reports from AFP with a social media teaser.
In it they even joked about earlier claims that Neymar would only re-sign until mid-season when the Brasileiro Série A campaign pauses for the summer World Cup.
Showing his shirt and then that initial date, the word ‘error’ pops up and is replaced by the new December date.
Such a decision shows how much love Neymar has for his first-ever club, with many claiming he was just using them for regular minutes to push for a spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s World Cup squad.
Now he will be staying beyond the summer tournament, and will also be out of action until March anyway, having gone for surgery on a knee ailment he played through to help keep Santos in the top flight.
Regardless, Ancelotti has never sounded positive on a first Neymar call-up since October 2023, with his last update suggesting a return isn’t on the cards.
“Since we’re talking about Neymar, we have to talk about other footballers,” he said in a recent press conference.
“We have to think about Brazil, which can exist with or without Neymar.”
