To say things haven’t worked out for Neymar back at Santos would be one hell of an understatement.
Brazil‘s all-time top scorer made the return to his boyhood club with the main aim of returning to form and booking a spot at the 2026 World Cup.
However, it’s now been announced he will miss the remainder of the season with a torn meniscus in his left knee.
The Brasileirão Série A season ends in mid-December, but Neymar will be out well into 2026, making a call-up to Carlo Ancelotti’s squad incredibly unlikely.
The legendary coach has so far resisted a Neymar recall, saying the most expensive player of all-time needs to prove his fitness.
And that window of opportunity now looks shut.
Should Neymar return sooner than expected in 2026, he could end up being unable to impress Ancelotti if he’s playing in the second tier.
Santos are now in the relegation zone with three games left to play, and their legendary forward has made just 25 appearances and scored seven goals since his heralded January return, hardly helping their survival chances, or his of making the World Cup.
