Having just made his return for Santos, Neymar has suggested this could be his final season as a player.
The 34-year-old returned from a long-term knee injury to help Santos to a 6-0 win last time out, although the game was an example of why his career has never been easy.
Hacked down in painful fashion, Neymar received extensive treatment before continuing for his boyhood side.
Santos narrowly avoided relegation from the Brasileiro Série A last season with Neymar starring in their last handful of games, but they look set for another difficult year.
And for their striking great, it could be his last.
Neymar could retire a the end of the year
“I don’t know what the future holds for me; it’s possible that in December I might want to retire,” he said.
“I’m happy and relieved to be back a bit stronger than before. Obviously, I need to get back into better rhythm, but with perseverance I’ll reach 100%.
“I’m taking it step by step. I don’t know what the future holds; my instincts will decide. One day at a time.
“This year is crucial, not only for Santos, but also for the Brazilian national team and for me.”
Neymar hasn’t played for Brazil since October 2023 and Carlo Ancelotti has continually suggested a recall is unlikely.
His biggest condition is that Neymar is at 100% form and fitness, and time is running out before the summer tournament.
