Neymar may have ended his World Cup chances all by himself with his Santos coach revealing he’s set to play through injury to try and stave off relegation.
Brazil‘s all-time top scorer looked a certainty to miss the end of the Brazilian league season after sustaining a meniscus injury in his knee.
Yet Santos coach Juan Pablo Vojvoda has said Neymar has made himself available for the final three games of the season with Santos in the relegation zone.
“The plan is to have him available against Sport,” the coach told the media.
“I need to talk to him; I’m not physically with Neymar at the moment, and I’ll respect his decision. But his intention is to play; he always wants to participate.
“Before the match against Mirassol, he already felt discomfort and carried it throughout the game. The next day, the pain was considerable.
“We’re playing every three days, with exhausting trips. We’ll arrive in Santos tomorrow afternoon…
“He’s a key player for these three matches and will give us a hand. He’s our leader. He’ll be with us. He simply felt that today he couldn’t keep up with the pace the match demanded.”
Neymar trained on Wednesday, but the decision to aggravate a serious problem in a season full of injuries will almost certainly end his Brazil World Cup hopes, with Carlo Ancelotti saying he’ll only recall the striker if he’s physically and match fit.
