DR Congo’s most famous fan, and possibly the most famous fan at the World Cup full stop, is in trouble.
Michel Nkuka Mboladinga has been impersonating the country’s former Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba for years, garnering fame at the 2025/26 AFCON.
The fan has become known as Lumumba Vea, in reference to the martyr and his favourite football club, and he stands as a statue for 90 minutes.
The act reportedly goes back 13 years during Congolese league matches before becoming a staple of the national team.
Lumumba Vea’s presence at the 2026 World Cup took attention as he missed Congo’s opener due to Ebola quarantine rules.
Why DR Congo fan Lumumba Vea is controversial
He’s since arrived in the Americas and performed his act, but not without controversy.
Lumumba Vea’s life has changed since AFCON and he is now accompanied by a bodyguard and three managers taking care of his career.
One of their decisions has seen his reputation left in tatters, as Lumumba Vea signed up for a deodorant commercial.

A number of fans slammed the deal, with one writing on the post: “Know that Lumumba would never have accepted this deal.
“He was fighting precisely against this. And I even think we should stop calling him Lumumba.
“Let him eat the money if he wants, but let him not do it in the name of a person who sacrificed his life to fight against imperialism and colonialism.”
Who was Patrice Lumumba?
Patrice Lumumba is considered one of the leading figures in the decolonial struggle and against imperialism in Africa.
In the Democratic Republic of Congo, he was the main political leader in the movement that led to the independence of the African country from Belgium in 1960.
Months later, in January 1961, he was assassinated. His body was dissolved in acid, but he became a martyr on the continent.
