Algeria’s Mohamed Amoura has rather stupidly made himself the villain of AFCON.
The Wolfsburg midfielder, who didn’t even score or assist the winning goal in a 1-0 victory over DR Congo decided to mock opposition fans anyway.
After Adil Boulbina’s extra time strike sealed the victory Amoura headed over to the DR Congo fans and mocked famous supporter Michel Kuka Mboladinga, standing like a statue before falling over.
With ‘Kuka’ going so viral for standing dead still for the 90 minutes of each match, you’d have expected Amoura might have done some research on why.
The fan has been staging a tribute to Patrice Lumumba, the historic Congolese prime minister assassinated in 1961 and a key figure in the country’s struggle for independence.
After copping plenty of heat, Amoura apologised on social media, writing: “I want to clarify one thing: at that moment I wasn’t aware of what the person or symbol in the stands represented.
“I simply wanted to joke around, in a lighthearted and playful spirit, without any ill intent or desire to provoke anyone.
“I respect Congo and their team. I sincerely wish them the best and hope they qualify for the World Cup.
“If my attitude has been misinterpreted, I sincerely regret it, because that was absolutely not my intention.
“I remain focused on the field and on representing my country with pride.”
