Of the many quirks of the new FIFA scheduling, Mexico feel they’ve come out as one of the worst.
The co-hosts were one of the first teams to book their last 32 spot at the tournament, doing so on June 24th.
However, Mexico then had to wait until Saturday to officially find out that Ecuador would be their opponent.
As such, Mexico’s benefit of being a host was ruled out, with them only having Sunday and Monday to work out when and where they would travel and train.
Marca report that coach Javier Aguirre was ‘furious’ along with his colleagues.
Rubén Rodríguez of FOX Sports added: “First, there’s a sense of frustration.
“Javier Aguirre hasn’t expressed it, and it’s unlikely he will.
“There’s frustration because you qualified four days ago, and you don’t find out until Saturday when, where, and who you’re going to face.
“There’s frustration within the National Teams Directorate about how the schedule was drawn up, when other teams already knew who they were going to play.”
Eventually, Mexico had things go their way, being drawn at their home Azteca stadium.
