There were shocking scenes in the Concacaf Nations League on Friday night as Mexico’s Javier Aguirre was left bleeding from his head by an object thrown from the stands.
Honduras beat Mexico 2-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final tie, but may well be facing severe punishment for what happened at full-time.
Former Osasuna and Mallorca coach Aguirre was pelted with objects at full-time, and what appeared to be a can struck him on the head causing him to bleed profusely.
However, the 65-year-old coach acted as if nothing had happened, greeting his own players and opponents who looked concerned and managed to force him down the tunnel for treatment.
Later appearing for his post-match press conference with the blood wiped away and presumably a few stitches, Aguirre didn’t change his attitude and continued to play down the incident.
Asked what happened he said: “Nothing, nothing, it’s just football.
“It’s just another game, I insist, we have to recover I fully trust my players and I hope that in Toluca we are able to turn this situation around.
“I think the game was clean, they deserved to win.”
