The story of Neymar’s late season for Santos has taken another dramatic twist with the Brazil great indeed playing through injury for his boyhood club.
Not only did he appear for Santos against Sport Recife despite suffering what was reported as a season-ending meniscus injury, he both scored and assisted in the 3-0 win.
The 33-year-old wasn’t at his dynamic best, but still slotted in a lovely opener before assisting the third from a corner.
Neymar played 90 minutes, and was substituted off in injury time, immediately applying ice to his injured knee on the bench.
While we don’t want to dampen the positivity, it is key to point out two downsides.
Two teams in the four-time relegation zone have a game in hand this weekend, and the already-relegated Sport Recife have been abysmal this season sitting last on 17 points, behind Juventude on 34.
Discussing his injury post-match, Neymar said: “Not everything is alright, but the people who need to know about the injury are the club doctors, myself, and my staff.
“I’m a human being, and no human being deserves to hear the nonsense I heard.”
