Jurgen Klopp’s decision to work for Red Bull hasn’t gone down well, even among his former players.
The former Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund and Mainz coach announced the shock decision last week, and received huge heat back in his homeland for joining an organisation despised in Germany for their RB Leipzig ownership.
Pundits and fans tore Klopp to pieces, and now one of his former players has given his thoughts.
Kevin Grosskreutz, who appeared 236 times for Klopp, the 16th most of any player in his career, was asked about his old BVB coach’s move, and he didn’t hold back.
“I woke up, had 30 messages on my phone and was already thinking: What happened?” said Grosskreutz.
“I, like many, thought I was in a dream and later hoped it was fake news.
“It was a shock and a sadness. In some ways, it still hasn’t fully sunk in. I’ll tell him personally. I don’t think anyone expected it.
“It’s very, very strange and I still can’t understand it. However, he is a friend of mine to whom I owe a lot. I will always be grateful too.
“As a football fan, I think it’s s***, but as a friend you have to accept these decisions. When we meet, I’ll tell him in person that I think it’s s*** that he’s doing something like that!”
