The dream of all Borussia Dortmund fans didn’t come to fruition in the summer with Jurgen Klopp sticking with his decision to quit coaching.
The legendary Liverpool coach called time on his career – at least for six months – as he will return in an advisory role with the Red Bull group in January 2025.
Yet despite making it clear that coaching was off the cards, Klopp was linked with becoming the sporting director at BVB, who last won the Bundesliga under him, twice.
He instead made the controversial move to join Red Bull who are detested in Germany, and that’s despite a Dortmund return being in his hands.
Discussing Klopp’s future, departing BVB CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke said: “We discussed that a long time ago. Jürgen knows full well that he could have almost chosen his job at Borussia Dortmund.
“But I don’t think he wanted to be solely responsible for running a club in the sporting area.
“It’s a completely different thing whether you do a project with five or six clubs as a kind of supervisor or return to Borussia Dortmund.”
Yet Klopp’s return with Red Bull and rivals Leipzig means he can’t talk to Watzke about footballing matters anymore, something the executive regrets.
“I am and will always remain his friend,” he said. “Jürgen has done so much for Borussia Dortmund that we have to respect that.
“The only thing I regret is the fact that I can no longer talk to him about Borussia Dortmund in our discussions. That will no longer happen.”
