Kevin Grosskreutz, remember him?
The former Borussia Dortmund defender wasn’t a big name during his time as a two-time Bundesliga winner and World Cup champion, but he’s now trying to be in podcasting.
Speaking on a recent edition, he laid into Wolfsburg who are struggling at the bottom of the table.
Seen as one of the more plastic German clubs having only been founded in 1940 and bankrolled by Volkswagen, Grosskreutz sarcastically talked about their struggles.
“They really shouldn’t be relegated. The stadium is always full, the atmosphere is fantastic,” he joked on Viertelstunde Fußball.
He then added: “I always speak from the heart. I want, I wish, that they get relegated! And that’s that.”
So viral were the comments that Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking has since spoken out.
“I recommend that people sweep in front of their own door,” he said in response.
“These statements are disrespectful because it’s very easy to criticise from the outside.
“If a club has played in the Bundesliga for almost 30 years, it has every sporting justification for staying there.”
