Over two years on from his retirement, Bas Dost has recalled the moment of horror that ended his career.
The former Sporting, Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt striker had just started the new 2023/24 season for NEC Nijmegen when he collapsed with a heart attack in a game away at AZ on October 29.
The footage was horrible at the time, but now Dost has felt the strength to watch it, only to be brought to tears.
“This really hits home,” he said on Dutch TV show ‘Eva’, hosted by Eva Jinek where he was joined by the club doctors who saved his life.
“Without these people, I wouldn’t be here,” he added.
The 36-year-old had to retire due to an inflamed heart muscle, but had some good news about his condition.
“Things are looking very good at the moment,” he revealed.
“I’ve had an ultrasound of my heart, and the box has been checked. Everything looks good.
“It’s fine, my career has been great. Of course, I didn’t want to say goodbye like that, but it is what it is.
“Above all, be grateful for what you have; I’ve truly learned that.”
