It’s certainly tabloid-y, but Bayer Leverkusen fans will take it.
Reports in Germany, including from the reputable Sky Sports, claim that Xabi Alonso is looking for a new family home in Dusseldorf – suggesting a stay next season.
The Bundesliga and DFB Pokal winning coach has been linked to all the biggest teams on the planet, but there’s increasing hope in Germany he’ll stick around, with a decision expected in the coming weeks.
Last year the former midfielder broke Liverpool and Bayern Munich hearts by announcing his stay after the March international break, and similar is expected this year.
Should Alonso’s stay come to fruition, Sky pundit Didi Hamann thinks it will mean that Bundesliga Player of the Year Florian Wirtz is also sticking around.
“If they stay, it would surprise me. I could imagine that if Wirtz were to stay, that would be the only way for the coach to stay as well,” he said.
“I do think that depends on whether Xabi stays. I would be surprised to spend a third year there after what he has already achieved.
“If you want to go to the really big clubs, then you have to make the step at some point. I would of course be happy for Leverkusen and the league because we want to have the best players and coaches here. And we have two of them in Leverkusen.”
