Now a legend with RC Lens, Odsonne Edouard could have done similar at this summer’s World Cup, but chose not to.
The former Celtic, Crystal Palace and Leicester striker is now a Coupe de France champion with Lens, scoring to help them to their first ever French cup.
Edouard has been in fine form after an up and down spell in Britain, and as such Haiti tried to get him to the World Cup.
The 28-year-old striker’s parents are both of Haitian descent, but Edouard, born in French Guiana, is the top scorer in the history of the French under-21 team.
He’s never had a call up to the senior side, though, and Haiti tried to pounce.
However, the Lens man thinks it would’ve been unfair to arrive at their first-ever World Cup.
”I didn’t feel I deserved it,” he said during the cup celebrations. “The players fought hard to qualify.
“I wasn’t going to arrive at the last minute to take advantage of this World Cup. If I’m going to play in it, I have to earn it.”
